To help celebrate the 2008 Mosman Festival and the 10th anniversary of the Mosman Art Gallery, Mosman Council has invited its friendship communities (sister cities) to join the festivities and participate in The Art of Friendship exhibition at the Mosman Art Gallery.

This unique exhibition presents the creative impulses and achievements of artists and craft practitioners from Mudanjiang in China, Paciano in Italy, Glen Innes, NSW and Norfolk Island. Reflecting their different origins, the artworks are widely varied and include carved and painted ostrich eggs, intricate paper cut designs, fine bone jewellery, pandanus mats and clothing, oil paintings and watercolours, pen and ink drawings, prints and photographs.

These fascinating artworks also explore a wide range of subjects that reveal distinctive characteristics, traditions and customs of each community. The influence of Celtic culture is apparent in paintings from Glen Innes while the signs of the zodiac have inspired bold and lively designs from a Mudanjiang artist. The small town of Paciano and its surrounding rural landscape are the source of picturesque photographs that evoke a medieval world untouched by modern life. And, a descendent of the Bounty from Norfolk Island has paid homage to his past and an association with Tahiti in the form of a beautiful necklace.

The Art of Friendship exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity to see an exciting range of artworks and learn about Mosman’s Friendship Communities from other parts of the country, and the world. It also provides an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between Mosman and its Friendship Communities.

The exhibition opens on Saturday, October 18 and closes on November 9. The official opening function will in held in conjunction with the launch of the Mosman Festival on Friday evening, October 24.
